Jalapeno Infused Guava Margarita

Before V and I moved to Dallas, and before I moved to India to work on my home based baking business, V and I lived in a small town in Arizona with one traffic light and three restaurants- one of which had given me food poisoning twice so we never went.

The up side of staying in a place with no eating out options is that when I wanted to lose weight it was easier to. With no external temptations, I was able to successfully complete my month of gluten free, sugar free and a week of raw diet.

Dieting in Dallas (or losing weight, to be more precise) is a whole different ball game. I decided to go for a month long gluten free sugar free diet in April to lose the weight I gained it after coming to US. The timing of my diet could not be more wrong. Spring time is festival time in Dallas. And I am the kinds who is not going to NOT have funnel cakes when there is a street art festival. Funnel cakes are a festival thing and you can not NOT go to a festival and NOT have funnel cakes. Its just so wrong. And even though the Urban Bazaar hosted by Little D Markets had lots of gluten free and refined sugar free options like Gather Kitchen but then there were kessler pie co’s jars and since I had never tried one before and since I was already there it would have been a shame to not try. I don’t regret it one bit.

Plus there have been cookbooks to review tis month. I did actually find lots of gluten free stuff on Andie Mitchell’s book like the smashed roasted garlic potatoes, tofu stir fry and this spicy chicken enchiladas that I made a few days back. The enchiladas were so good. I will be posting a recipe soon. Anyway I digress.

What was I talking about

Funnel cakes?

Nope.

I was saying, this diet stuff is hard especially in the spring months in Dallas with all that is going on.

I am already making Cinco de Mayo plans.

While I missed the Taco Libre event this past Saturday, I did get a chance to try some Margaritas at Taco Cabana. Taco Cabana has a great special happy hour rate, and their Jalapeño infused Guava margarita is the bomb. Along with a bunch of foodies, I was invited for a special tasting of Taco Cabana’s creation, and am glad besides good food and drinking a really good margarita, I made some new friends along the way.

I am sharing a few pictures from that event.

There were a bunch of other lovely foodies at the event and am happy that I am getting to know people outside of V’s social circle and making my own friends.

I am enjoying all the eating options Dallas has to offer. Even though we mostly eat at home, V and I spend most of our weekends eating out. Besides, posting about my foodie adventures on my instagram account @shumi2712 and @muddychoux, I am going to start a series named Eating Dallas on the blog, where I will share the week in food and other Dallas related stuff that went by. I have already posted about a few related posts before- the Deep Ellum Art festival, Savor Dallas and Urban Bazaar, but am hoping to make this a weekly series like GMT.

If you are looking for brunch ideas for Mother’s Day or just dining options for the weekend here are a few suggestions from our eating Dallas adventures:

Bruschetta at The Social House

The Bruschetta at The Social House is a must try. Loved every bite of it. Also, love all the game options they have there. A fun place to visit for brunch, and more fun with a group of friends. Its pet friendly too.

The hummus plate at Medina Oven and Bar

We loved the hummus platter at Medina Oven and Bar. It was fairly empty when we went there (we were the only people), but we liked everything we ordered.

Another brunch spot that I love is The Rustic, Dallas. Not only is the food great (their fried chicken is pure love) but love the atmosphere of the place with live bands playing in the background. For brunch they have a fixed menu which is not the most friendly to vegetarians. And since their lunch menu starts post 2, whne V and I went for the first time on a Saturday (the day V eats no meat) he had to made do with one of their salads. We went again on a Sunday so that V could enjoy the brunch. Both he and I love the place.

That’s it for now. I will be back with more suggestions next week with Eating Dallas.

Before I leave, if you live or are passing through Dallas and are on the look out for some festivals to attend this May: this list should be on your calendar.

6 Thoughts on “Eating Dallas: Taco Cabana, The Social House, The Rustic and more

  1. You had me at the word, cake!

So I’m trying to get back to healthier eating, but it is soooo hard. I got married 4 months ago and even though our honeymoon was only a week, it seems as if the honeymoon eating lasted up until yesterday.

I’ve never had a funnel cake though and if I were you, I’d do the same. I think it’s probably more healthier in the long-term to eat what you want, rather then restrict, because I know from experience that the binging that comes after restriction is one of the worst feelings in the world.

These pictures are absolutely gorgeous. Never would have thought they were all in Dallas! Couldn’t eat half of that stuff though… but considering I’m “trying” to eat healthier anyway, that’s okay! 🙂

    • Congratulations on your marriage! Loved reading your love story. Thank you so much for appreciating. I agree rather than restrict eat everything in moderation is the key!

  2. i am loving all these eats from dallas! i’d love to meet with other dallas bloggers but before that, you and i need to grab a drink as soon as im back 🙂
